Google Cloud Uses AI to Save Energy
For data centers to function properly, they need to be kept at the proper temperature. And as we all know, keeping an area cool can come at no small expense. That’s why Google has decided to use AI to cut back on data center energy costs.
The Google subsidiary Deepmind, which is responsible for most of Google’s AI research, announced this week that Google has saved 30% on its energy bills by improving cooling system efficiency. Savings that should drastically help the $5.5 billion capital projects expenses bill reported last quarter that most likely went primarily to data center costs.
The algorithm that Deepmind and Google’s data center teams developed predicts future energy consumption based on past consumption trends. Could this be a selling point for Google’s AI technology for the public? Stay tuned to future Cloud Round-Ups to find out.
Google Cloud Gets a “Sweet” New Partner
Google Cloud has announced this week that it has obtained a “sweet” new partner, King Digital Entertainment LLC, a London headquartered gaming firm that is known for making mobile games like Candy Crush Saga. King is one of the world’s largest mobile gaming developers.
The company will be moving its core data infrastructure and AI machine learning platform to Google Cloud.Their main drive for partnering with Google was the innovation potential in data science and engineering. King takes an interest in data analytics in order to understand how players interact with their games.
King’s Vice President of Technology, Asa Bredin, and CIO, Jacques Erasmus, are excited about the move saying that it, “…will amplify our own talented engineers’ efforts, allow us to focus more on differentiation [and] areas of effort where King needs unique capabilities not provided by the market.” It will be interesting to see what new things King will have in store for gaming thanks to their partnership.
