Paul Teich, Liftr’s principal analyst, attended OCP Global Summit from March 14-15 in San Jose, Ca. The annual summit is designed to help grow, drive, and support the open hardware ecosystem in, near, and around the datacenter and beyond. The summit’s sizable sponsor list is filled with notable names such as Facebook, Huawei, Microsoft, and Intel to name a few. Facebook, Google, and Others Experiences Outages
Facebook and several of its web properties experienced major outages for the majority of last Wednesday, the 30th anniversary of the World Wide Web, following the outage experienced by Google, Gmail, and YouTube the previous day. According to the Down Detector and Kurt Eichenwald of the New York Times, many sites were down or struggling over a 12-hour period.
Facebook took to Twitter, since their own platform was not an option, to make a statement about the outage. The company said that they were aware that people were having issues accessing their family of apps, and were working to resolve the issue as soon as possible, but could confirm that the issue was not related to a DDoS attack. Google did not provide an explanation for their outage.
Services were fully restored late in the evening going into the next day on the 14th. Geekwire reported this to be the worst service issue Down Detector has ever tracked. That same morning the outage was fully resolved, Facebook tweeted an explanation for the downtime, “Yesterday, as a result of a server configuration change, many people had trouble accessing our apps and services. We’ve now resolved the issues and our systems are recovering. We’re very sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate everyone’s patience.”
AWS’ New Summit Series Announcement
AWS has announced one of their Summit Series will be taking place in London on May 8. The one-day event will cover a variety of cloud computing topics through keynote announcements and breakout sessions. The opening keynote speech will be given by Matt Garman, Vice president of Amazon EC2 for AWS.
AWS also opened up ticket sales for its new Re:Inforce conference, being held June 25-26 in Boston, Massachusetts. The conference will focus on cloud security and show how AWS can keep businesses and customers secure in the cloud. The event web page says the event will be a “hands on learning-experience.
Google Cloud and Atos’ AI Chatbot
Atos, a global leader in digital transformation, announced last week that they would be signing a contract with T-Mobile Netherlands along with their partner Google Cloud to deliver a new scalable chatbot using AI; part of T-Mobile’s digital transformation plan. The multi-channel chatbot will be designed to streamline customer inquiries, reduce costs, and increase customer satisfaction.
The contract includes the build of the bot and outlines plans to develop it further through AI. The chatbot will be connected to the T-Mobile Netherlands customer website and social media channels, as well as to customer and product databases. Last November, the two companies were able to produce a successful chatbot proof of concept, which achieved a high level of user intent recognition.
Kim Larsen, CTIO of T-Mobile Netherlands said, “We recognize the potential benefit of AI and with this new enhanced chatbot we will be able to offer our customers an improved and more efficient service.”
Alibaba Cloud ‘s SXSW Presentation
South by Southwest Interactive is just wrapping up here in Austin. Principal Analyst Paul Teich and Social Media and PR specialist Trent Warren had a busy week attending multiple demonstrations, talks, and presentations on new and interesting topics in the cloud, including Alibaba Cloud’s presentation.
Teich noted that when Alibaba Cloud talks digital transformation, it tends to speak more about transforming communities than targeting company transformation. That is a stark difference between how other technology vendors in their sector talk about digital transformation, and may indicate a difference in how Alibaba positions its cloud products.
